Bowman's Folly, BW. Photograph of house with large second floor middle window and covered porch. Written on back: "Bowman’s Folly," on Folly Creek, not far from Accomac Court House, Accomac County, Va., was built in 1805 [1780 crossed out underneath this date] by Gen. John Cropper of Revolutionary fame. The plantation itself dates back to 1663 when the original owner, Edward Bowman, Sheriff, Burgess, and Mayor built an earlier home on the same site. John Cropper was his great grandson. The woodwork, exterior particularly, is among the finest on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, particularly the beautiful dormers and center stair window. It is now owned by Col. Beverly Brown of Front Royal, Virginia. 1) 1663- Edmund [Edward?] Bowman 2) His daughter, Gertrude, wife of John Cropper, heired half the plantation and the home, (another daughter, wife of Southy Littleton, descendant of Sir Thomas Littleton, author, heired the other half of the plantation.) 3) Sebastian Cropper (son of Gertrude B. and John Cropper) 4) Bowman Cropper, son of Sebastian 5) Sebastian II (married Sabra, dtr. of Col. Coventon Corbin of "Chincoteague") 6) Famous Gen. John Cropper, son of Sebastian II, (Col in Va. Continental Line - later Gen. State Militia (He had all the plantation slaves hand [catch] for three months to form high mound before buidling in 1805) |
