Description |
Mount Custis, BW. Photograph of wood frame house. Ivy climbing up side. Windows shuttered. Brick chimney. Written on back: "Mt. Custis" in Accomac Co., Va., not far from Accomac Court House, was built in 1650 or 1660 by John McKeel who came over with the first John Custis from Holland in 1636. The rear section of the house is the oldest, the front section having been added about 1750 by the Bayly family, forming an H [outline of an H]. It is on Parker's Creek, which runs into Metompkin Bay. McKeel married a Miss Custis. The interior is most unusual as there are so many different wings and levels. Mrs. Louis McLane Tiffany of Balto. [Baltimore] (_ee Bayly) willed the plantation to the University of Virginia in 1929 and it was subsequently divided into several farms and sold. One quaint gravestone reads: "Here lies the body of Lt. Col. Henry Custis, son of Robinson and Mary Custis. He was born on July 28th, 1743 and departed this life May 27th 1793. Death’s terror is the mountain faith removes. 'Tis Faith disarms destruction. Believe, and look with Triumph on the tomb." |
