Description |
Lawrence Bagwell, BW. Standing in front of group of trees, Eyre Hall in background. Written on back: Lawrence Bagwell, negro caretaker at "Eyre Hall," Northampton, Co., Virginia, whose father was a slave, and his father before him, in the Eyre family. The old mansion can be seen in the background at the left hand side. In summer time the canopy found by the branches of the giant trees makes it almost "impossible" to take a picture of the yard. [Map of lane and house location] Note in ink: Lawrence Bagwell buried "Barker," our pointer puppy, who was poisoned by the Richardson boy, who lived next door to us on Tazelwell Ave, in Cape Charles. He was arguing at my father for refusing to loan him our "grass cutter" (lawn mower). Sept 14, 1929. Barker was a dear puppy and carried my red felt bedroom slippers around in his mouth. He did not chew it - just carried it around. The wicked Richardson boy was killed about 20 years later by the "noon train," his car having stalled on the tracks 1 mile north of Cape Charles. |
