"Vaucluse" BW. Wood frame house, two covered porches. Girl in foreground. Writteon on back: "Vaucluse" built by the Upshur family in 1740 by an ancester of Abel Upsher, Secretary of State under Tyler, who lost his life in the explosion of a great gun aboard the battleship "Princeton" in Feb. 1844. The grave of Commodore George Parker Upshur is in the family burying ground on the plantation near the water’s edge. He died in Spitzia, Italy, of a fever in 1802 and his body was brought home in a metal casket, preserved in alcohol at the expense of the government accompained by a faithful negro servant. The marble mantle pieces are fine specimens as found in this home. It is now owned by the Pope Family of New York and is situated in Church Neck, Northampton Co, Va. |
