Description |
Needlepoint sampler made by Elizabeth Griffith of Northampton County in 1844. Sampler is unfinished. Design has a flower and vine embroidery border around proper left, top and proper measuring 2 inches wide. Sampler contains history of Elizabeth's family with the birth and death dates of her parents and siblings. Sampler text at top reads: "Register. Mr. John Griffith was born, Miss Nancy Griffith was born Feb 1, 1810, They were married Sep 17 1828, have the following children viz" Embroidered box at center contains following text: "Names, Elizabeth Ann, Mary Ellen, Loucetta S" "Births, Sept 1 1829, Dec 24 1831, Dec 13 1833" "Deaths, May 9 1826" Below embroidered box with names is embroidered tombstone outline with following text "Mr. J G died, Aug 12 1834, aged 32, Mrs N G die, Jan 1 1842, aged 32." Small tree beside tombstone. Text at bottom of sampler "My Dear Grandmother Mrs N Giffith, was born, Wrought by Elizabeth A Griffith 1844." |
