Description |
Coin silver hailing trumpet with nautical emblems applied on an oval shape. The emblem depicts the sinking of the steamship "SS Central America"after the ship was caught in a hurricane on September 12, 1857 near the Carolinas. Only 153 people out of 578 of the ship's crew and passengers surived. Nine tons of gold from the California Gold Rush was lost with the ship. Thomas Badger of the Eastern Shore was a passenger who assisted people to lifeboats. He was presented this trumpet for his life saving efforts. Inscription on base reads: "Presented to Capt. Thomas W. Badger by the Central America Fund Committee in token of their high appreciation of his conduct on board of the Steamer Central America, at the time of the loss of that illfated vessel, New York, May 17, 1858." |
