Description |
Portrait of Abel Upshur, Secretary of State under President John Tyler (1843-1844). Oil on canvas in a frame of gilt and gesso on wood. Dated 1872, undoubtedly a copy of an earlier original, possibly by G.P.A. Healey. A half length portrait showing Mr. Upshur in a black coat and white shirt against an aqua background. Upshur was born in Northampton County and resided at the Upshur family home "Vaucluse" near Bridgetown, VA. Upshur served in several public offices starting in the Virginia General Assembly and eventually Secretary of State under President Tyler. Upshur was killed in 1844 aboard the "USS Princeton" when a cannon exploded after a test fire. |
