Engraving of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Broadside engraving made by Western Bank Note & Engraving Company in 1868. This engraving was possibly hung at Northampton County Court House after its publication. Engraving on paper with border. "Abolishing Slavery" printed near the top in large black letters. Has the terms of the amendment which ended slavery in the United States except as punishment for a crime. The amendment was passed on January 31, 1865 and ratified on December 6, 1865. Features the signatures of Abraham Lincoln (President), Hannibal Hamlin (Vice President and President of the Senate), J. W. Forney (Secretary of the Senate), Edward McPherson (Clerk of the House), Schuyler Colfax (Speaker of the House), and the senators and representatives that voted in favor of the amendment. In between the two sections of the amendment is a depiction of an African American family with a silhouette of Lincoln. Black, metal frame with a thin border along edges. |
