Description |
Drawing shows the explosion of the "Peacemaker" cannon onboard the steam warship the "USS Princeton" on February 28, 1844. The drawing depicts the death of Secretary of State Abel Parker Upshur, of Northampton County, when the cannon backfired. Caption on print reads: "Awful Explosion of the 'Peace-Maker' on board the U.S. steam frigate 'Princeton,' on Wednesday, 28th Feb. 1844. By which melancholy accident the Sec. of State Mr. Upshur, the Sec. of the Navy Mr. Gilmer, Com. Kennon, Mr. Gardiner of N.Y. & Mr. Maxcy were instantly killed. Capt. Stockton & 12 of the Ships Company wounded." The caption also lists several of the passengers depicted including Upshur, Gilmer, and Stockton. Lithograph made and published by N.
